The North Face Endurance Challenge 2015

Concept

The North Face Endurance Challenge Costa Rica 2015 is a trail running endurance race that will combine an athletic challenge with tourism. It is part of the International Race Series organized by The North Face, seeking to promote mountain sports immersed in nature in a safe and responsible way, with a minimum impact philosophy.

Hundreds of runners will travel to the Volcán Rincón de la Vieja in Liberia, Costa Rica. Runners from all parts of the world will line up at the starting line to challenge themselves to the 3rd edition of The North Face Endurance Challenge Costa Rica, choosing among different race lengths, from 10km to 80km, all on challenging trails. The date is set for May 30th, 2015. Are you ready to Endure?

This race format includes categories for beginning trail runners as well as for the intermediate and expert ultra runners. The race courses explore stunning natural terrain and their difficulty varies with the different distances offered.

The race altitude will be between 850ft and 3,280ft above sea level, depending on the race course length. This mountain race will have all trails clearly marked and the challenge will be to explore your own limits within the race distance chosen. The offered courses are: 10km, 21km, 50km and 80km. There is no team format.

The weather in the race area is one of the mildest in Cost Rica. It is usually cloudy, minimizing the effects of heat stroke and dehydration for most athletes. It is without a doubt a serious challenge in a semi supported race format where the big allure is the stunning natural scenery, making this a unique event.

Costa Rica has 12 hours of sunlight and 12 hours of night time, so the last of the 80km runners will definitely deal with at least 2 hours of darkness.

History

The story of The North Face Endurance Challenge Series begins in 2006. During Dean Karnazes’ quest to run 50 marathons, in 50 states, in 50 consecutive days, otherwise known as The North Face Endurance 50, the idea of the Endurance Challenge Series was born. Following the momentum of the Endurance 50, The North Face sought to build lasting relationships with runners by creating an authentic experience with The North Face brand.

Launched in 2007, The North Face Endurance Challenge Series committed to pushing runners to their personal limits of endurance, while promoting the sport of ultra-trail running, a sport which is predicated on enjoying physical activity in nature in a safe and responsible manner. Courses were designed to challenge even the most experienced runners, while enhancing the philosophy of minimal impact with the beautiful scenery each event location had to offer.

The North Face Endurance Challenge is North America’s premier trail-running series that features two-day, trail-running festivals in six locations across North America: New York, Washington, D.C., Ontario, Wisconsin, Utah and California. The Series added events in Utah and in Ontario, Canada, the first-time international expansion of the North American Series.

Due to its great appeal and growth in Latin America, The North Face Endurance Challenge Series is quickly becoming one of the most popular International trail-running series outside of North America as well, with additional events in several Latin American countries, such as Costa Rica, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia and Peru. The Latin American Series is in line with the same characteristics of the North American Series offering unique settings in varied climates with the highest quality standards runners come to expect of The North Face Endurance Challenge Series.
